There are some who believe that everyone needs a therapist in today’s society. We all have underlying issues and underlying trauma which we need help in dealing with. There’s no shame in it, and now that the world has access to the internet, we can turn to online therapy to help work through our issues.

Below, you can read the pros and cons to online therapy.

The Pros

  1. i) You don’t have to travel

Anyone who lives in a rural or remote area knows how difficult it is to travel every day. If your town doesn’t even have a grocery store then you’re not likely to have a therapist close to you. That’s why you might want to consider turning to online therapy. You’ll be saving a lot of money in gas.

This is especially convenient for people who have physical limitations, which comes with its own set of psychological struggles. You have the opportunity to stay in your own home for the same benefits.

  1. ii) Money

Therapy can get incredibly expensive and when you add the cost of gas to travel there, your wallet can take a serious hit. Normally, you’ll spend a lot less money when you turn to online classes and not only this, but it is more convenient overall because you can choose the time in which you attend your online therapy sessions.

The Disadvantages

  1. i) Confidentiality

In any form of therapy, a major concern is whether or not the information you share will be kept confidential. The concern with online therapy is that the content you share is constantly being watched. Although your therapist is not likely to share your confidential information, you cannot forget that the internet never forgets.

  1. ii) It’s not best for some people

There are some people who benefit fully from being face-to-face with the counsellor or therapist. When you see a therapist in person, he or she is able to see the way you react to certain triggers and information; meanwhile, an online therapist cannot. Not only this, but people with legitimate and serious psychiatric illnesses should not seek help from online therapy; rather, they should book an appointment with a live therapist because they will likely need prescriptions and direct treatment.

iii) The legality

In the United States, each state has its own law regarding the treatment of patients across state lines. Online, a therapist can treat you from pretty much anywhere; however, there are requirements and treatment guidelines which will vary depending on where you live. Because of this, you might end up facing some legal issues.

Online therapy is a great option for people who do not want to make the trip, or people who are facing financial difficulties. This is because you can schedule appointments from your very couch, so you don’t have to pay for gas. You should be aware, however, that there are some disadvantages to going to online therapy. The greatest concerns are that you never know if your information is legitimately confidential, and you could face some legal problems.
