(Sports Network) - Playoff baseball returns to the District of Columbia for the first time in 79 years, as the Washington Nationals and St. Louis Cardinals play Game 3 of the National League Division Series at Nationals Park. Todays contest will mark the first postseason contest in the nations capital since the Washington Senators lost to the New York Giants at Griffith Stadium back on Oct. 7, 1933. "I think were excited not only for ourselves and all the hard work weve put in this year but to bring a playoff game to D.C.. Its something thats been a long time coming," shortstop Ian Desmond said. "Theyve been through a lot, a lot of tough years. I think its an exciting time in the Beltway." Getting the call for the Nationals in Game 3 will be righty Edwin Jackson, who won a World Series title with the Cardinals last season. Jackson, though, signed with Washington this past offseason and ended his first year in D.C., 10-11 with a 4.03 ERA. "Jacksons a very experienced pitcher," Nats manager Davey Johnson said. "Hes certainly up to it. But, you know, you have to pitch. You cant go out there and just throw against this ballclub. This is a good fastball-hitting club. You have to make some good pitches." Jackson was roughed up badly the last time he faced his former team on Sept. 28 when the Cards rocked him for eight earned runs in only 1 1/3 innings. He is 1-3 in seven games (6 starts) against them with a 4.58 ERA. St. Louis, meanwhile, will rely on a former NL Cy Young Award winner in Chris Carpenter, who missed most of the season following arm surgery. Carpenter only made three starts for the Cardinals this season and was 0-2 with a 3.71 ERA. "Everybody knows that it wasnt supposed to happen," Carpenter said about him pitching at all this season. "I put a lot of work into it, to hopefully have this opportunity. I didnt know if I was going to have this opportunity or not - and fortunately, I do." The 37-year-old righty, though, has been a playoff warrior for the Cardinals, going 9-2 with a 3.05 ERA in 15 postseason starts. During the Cardinals run to a 11th World Series title a year ago Carpenter went 4-0. That doesnt seem to faze the upstart Nats, though. "Him winning the World Series last year or whenever isnt going to do anything for him tomorrow," Nationals third baseman Ryan Zimmerman said. "Hes a great pitcher, and nobodys taking anything away from him in that aspect, but tomorrow were going to go out there with our plan and try and do what weve done all year." After losing Game 1 of this series, St. Louis evened the best-of-five set on Tuesday, as Carlos Beltran belted two of four home runs for the Cardinals in a 12-4 rout at Busch Stadium. Beltran and Jon Jay each knocked in three runs on two hits in the win, with Allen Craig finishing 3-for-5 with two runs scored and Daniel Descalso contributing a pair of RBI as part of a 2-for-4 performance. The Cardinals banged out 13 hits for the game, eight of which went for extra bases. "We know this offense has the potential to do this," said St. Louis manager Mike Matheny. "It was nice to see this, and hopefully it becomes contagious and the guys just keep going." Lance Lynn (1-0) was credited with the victory after striking out five in three innings in relief of an ailing Jaime Garcia, despite surrendering back- to-back solo homers to Zimmerman and Adam LaRoche in the fifth. Zimmerman went 2-for-4 with two RBI and Mike Morse also collected two hits for the NL East-winning Nationals, with starting pitcher Jordan Zimmermann coming through with an RBI single in a losing cause. Zimmermann (1-1) wasnt as effective on the mound, lasting just three innings while being tagged for five runs on seven hits. "He didnt really make a lot of adjustments out there," Johnson remarked. "He kind of stayed one way, hard-away. A good fastball-hitting club, you have to use both sides of the plate, and he didnt really use his slider much early on. Thats just a little inexperience." St. Louis took two of three from the Nationals over the final weekend of the regular season, but Washington won the season series, 4-3. Three of Washingtons wins, though, were at home. Louis Cardinals beat Arizona 6-1 on Tuesday night, handing the Diamondbacks their fourth loss in a row. Beltran, who had one of the Cardinals five homers in their 9-6 series-opening win on Monday, hit a two-run homer off Ian Kennedy in the first, then cleared the bases with a shot into the swimming pool area in right-centre in the seconds, his 10th career grand slam. ray ban sunglasses for sale . -- No one has led more late game-winning drives during the past five seasons than Matt Ryan, and the Atlanta Falcons quarterback did it again with his fifth one this season. officialraybansunglassesoutlet .Y. -- The Buffalo Bills have released nine players, including receiver David Clowney and linebacker Danny Batten, the teams 2010 sixth-round draft pick. Reasons to Believe 1. Run To Daylight – As mentioned earlier, starting RB Jamaal Charles returns after missing most of last year with an ACL injury. This is the same Charles who was going in the top five in most fantasy drafts last year. Package him with Peyton Hillis, minus the crazy expectations put on him in Cleveland last year, and you have the makings of a potent rushing tandem. 2. The Rest Of The ACL Club – Charles wasnt the only high impact player lost to an ACL injury last year. The Chiefs also return tight end Tony Moeaki, who showed a lot of promise in his one full season in the league, and safety Eric Berry, fresh off a Pro Bowl selection in 2010 before losing 2011 to injury. 3. Late Season Success – Kansas City finished the year 2-1 after Romeo Crennel replaced the fired Todd Haley as head coach. But more than the record, Chiefs players liked playing for Crennel more than Haley, who carried a somewhat oppressive reputation. If the late season atmosphere can carry over for a full season, the Chiefs will be a happier and more successive team. Reasons to Doubt 1. Maybe This Time? – Cassel has had three seasons as starting quarterback for the Chiefs, none of which were particularly impressive. Each year there seems to be a reason for people to think hes just a year away from putting it all together – the broken hand being last seasons excuse – but it mightt be time to admit the 30-year-old simply isnt the passer to lead K.ddddddddddddC. to where theyre looking to go.  2. Bowes Holdout – If Cassel is to finally put it all together this year, hell need all hands on deck, and leading WR Dwayne Bowes training camp holdout wasnt a good sign. Bowe signed his franchise tender and reported to the team with a couple weeks to go, but he runs the risk of starting the year out of synch with his quarterback. 3. Weak Draft Class – In todays NFL, a lot of teams expect to pick up at least one immediate starter in the draft, while some teams look to draft as much as 3-4 immediate starters. Drafting in the first half of each round this year, the Chiefs likely were expecting more from their draft class but 11th overall pick Dontari Poe still needs a lot of work according to reports, and Jeff Allen and Donald Stephenson, offensive linemen selected in the second and third round, are depth players at this point. What to Expect Despite the turmoil last year, Kansas City did well to hang tough in the AFC West. The division figures to be tougher this year however, so expecting anything more than fighting for third place division may be asking too much. A lot hinges on QB Matt Cassels play, but if a lot of things go right (Charles, Moeaki return to form, the team continues to respond to Crennel) the team could surprise and hang tough again. ' ' '
