Rate Furniture to renovate into retail

WEST HAVEN >> In a move that could change the face of the center of Allingtown, developers have purchased the landmark Carroll Cut Rate Furniture building and four adjacent properties on Route 1 for a reported $1.25 million.

They plan to renovate the high ceilinged, 44,458 square foot building just down the Boston Post Road from University of New Haven and convert it to 30 market rate apartments, Mayor Ed O said Tuesday.

The renovated building, at 222 Boston Post Road between Aftwood Place and Taft Avenue, would have 7,420 square feet of retail on the first floor, which might include a restaurant, according to plans on file in the zoning office in City Hall.

The plans show a possible drive up or drive through as part of the restaurant, which would be on property that used to be the Torrello Sons auto parts store. think it cleans up that whole area down there.

He said he hopes to see the $9.5 million development turn the area into a downtown, with stores and restaurants that cater to the growing UNH student body, as well as residents.

The total development site includes about 60,000 square feet of property.

All but three of the apartments would be two bedroom, 1,200 square foot units. There would be parking for about 100 vehicles in back.

Carroll Cut Rate which for much of its life has had an iconic and eye catching red and white neon sign is directly across Route 1 from Cellini Place and the Allingtown Green. O said officials hope that the developer private investment will spur additional activity nearby.

Much of the property across the street along the Boston Post Road and Cellini Place is owned by West Haven businessman Joseph E. Celentano.

It unclear what would happen to Carroll Cut Rate neon sign, which O said has been in place since 1937. O said the developers do not want it to remain on the renovated building.

The Carroll Cut Rate store, in business since 1926, will remain open in the current location until October, said co owner Cary Benjamin.

Construction will begin soon afterward, he said.

Benjamin grandfather, Samuel Benjamin, started the company as Carroll Cut Rate Cosmetics, manufacturing perfume, skin creams, lipstick, tooth powder and other toiletries and employing 350 people in the company heyday. He converted it to a furniture store in 1952.

Benjamin, whose brother, Bruce, also works at the store, and father, Jerry now in his 80s still comes in to work from time to time, said he hasn yet decided whether to close or move the store when J.J. Watt Authentic Jersey the time comes to leave the building.
